Joseph Squires Writes His Own Novel
Not only is he a sketch artist, video game designer and the oldest of six siblings, Joseph Squires is a first time book writer. Though he has written short stories in his head, he never wanted to be a writer. Squires says that writing is something that has just begun to interest him.
“I have all of these worlds and creations of mine, and basically one of my biggest hopes and dreams is that one day technology will get far enough that I’ll be able to take these things I’ve created and project them into the real world.”
As of right now Squires says his closest way of doing that is through book writing. The wanting of getting his ideas out there into the real world. Joseph thought about what he was leaving behind for people and realized there wasn’t that much. In Squires’ mind he knew he wanted his ideas to be known and more so wanted to be remembered.
In his book The Fallen Hero, the main character Alexia, has awakened with no memory to an unknown and strange world. With little to work with Alexia ventures around this new world and finds himself facing many challenges. A chapter is usually what happens in a day and sometimes thought out almost accidentally. Squires is good at thinking of things on the spot. He says his mind works best when it’s working in the spur of the moment. Often times he’ll think of something and as soon as it hits him he has to write it down instantly. “If I don’t do something with it immediately an hour from then it’ll be gone. I’ll try to remember it but it won’t be as good as it was before ” Squires said.
“I spend all my time in these fantasy stories that either I’ve made or other people make, in the form of reading or video games.” Squires explained how each of his stories are a part of him, especially his characters like Alexia, because they express Squires’ own likes and dislikes and things like in his dreams. He came to a point in the plot, where he could go one of two directions and depending on which direction he went with the story it would drastically change the story. It would change the direction the book went. So he didn’t know which one he wanted to go down. So he decided to go down the most extreme way, and it wasn’t until he went down that way that he saw what it was … and decided he didn’t want that path, that instead he wanted the other path. Joseph relates this to the real world, that’s what it’s like in life, sometimes you don’t know what it is that you really want until you take that path.
English teacher Sherry Rodriguez described him as “illuminating.” “There’s something about him that goes beyond the academics. He looks at the world and his education in a different way.” She says “I think he’s always been a writer even before he was my student, I think that’s just his nature, he’s a storyteller.”
Though he’s more than just a storyteller, he’s also a sketch artist along with a video game designer. When it comes to drawing Squires likes his pictures with some type of meaning and when looking at the finally piece Squires describes it as “Something that has been built up to for a long time.” “All of my drawings can have stories made out of them, it’d be fairly easy because the way I draw is I’ll think something that would belong in a story. Something at the climax, the biggest point in the stories or, the most beautiful point in the story. “
As for video games, Joseph has been able to create semi-playable games. By using a modeling software Squires can create character models and import them into a world, also of his design. He’s taken two video game courses, his freshman year he took Intro To Video Game Design and is currently taking CTE Design (Career Technical Education). Robert Booth teacher at Madera High said, “He’s doing amazing things… quick to learn everything,…. only had to be shown things once, before I had given the assignment he already had it done. ” he is just blown away with what he’s able to do.
Aside from his creative life, reality has a key part in his mentality. “Life with so many siblings is so amazingly fun, there is never a dull moment with our family” says Morgan Squires, Joseph’s younger sister. Game night in the Squire’s home is not your typical game night, they have teams, do challenges and tissue paper fights. “You kind of learn how to be responsible early in life if you have a lot of little siblings because you learn to clean up after them, give them baths, teach them to play nice, or help with homework.” says Morgan.”He has such a big imagination that I seriously think he has his own world in his mind. He is a logical person and thinks of all possibilities and outcomes with every situation. He is the expert at comebacks, I think he should become a lawyer because he would be good in a fight with words. And he’s my brother and I love him.”
